Training Recap 5

It’s official, I’m a runner.    Last week I bought my first GU and I got my first Runner’s World magazine in the mail.  They had a 5 issue deal for $5.00 so I thought I’d try it out.    I’ve tried the Tri-Berry GU and the Peanut Butter GU.  They were both okay, but I preferred the peanut butter.  They didn’t have any peanut butter when I went to buy some, so I bought one packet of Vanilla Bean to try out. I’m still learning when to use them, but I do think it helped on my last long run.  I have to admit, I felt a little strange walking around the store looking for it.  I had to ask for help and it felt really awkward…like I needed to say, ‘I run far enough now I do need GU’.

Last weeks training:

Tuesday:  2.5 miles

Wednesday:  Some basic body weight moves plus a little yoga.

Thursday:  2.5 mile run, 3 mile walk in the evening

Saturday:  7 miles!

Still need to work on being more consistent with stretching/yoga Resistance Training.  I love kettlebells, and they don’t take much time, so I have no excuse.

What do you use for energy?  GU, Clif Shots, Swedish Fish, Pretzels?

    I’m trying to find out what works for me, so I’ve tried some different stuff! I had Clif Shots this morning on my run but I’ve had GU during one of my halves. I haven’t done enough trial and error to come up with any kind of conclusion – but, just keep trying things out and see what works for you!

    I have to start getting into this stuff. I’m doing a half in October and am starting to get into longer runs. They should sell sample packs!

    I like the Clif gels & PowerGels better than Gu — Gu is so thick & sticky that it sticks in my mouth & throat & I waste fluids just trying to get it all down. The Clif & PowerGels are runnier, so I find them easier to swallow. (Also easier to open while moving.) I like the Shot Blocks for snacking on, but they stick in my teeth too much to use while running.

    I need to try some others. I’m also gluten free and don’t like the consistency of gummies. Although I didn’t see gluten on the Clif gels, their website said they are not gluten-free. I haven’t looked at Power gels yet. I was a little surprised the GU consistency didn’t bother me, but you do have to drink water with it. I’ve been seeing some new products such as Island Boost and CocoGo. I’d like to try their stuff out too, little more liquid and less additives.
